Waste Advantage Magazine Publishes Case Study on Diamond's Zero Waste Initiative

Waste Advantage publishes zero waste case study on
Diamond Packaging

According to the EPA, packaging accounts for 23 percent of the material reaching landfills each year. While Diamond Packaging’s designers work to make packaging more recyclable upstream, a partnership with Covanta offers a solution to increase recycling and eliminate landfilling from the manufacturing process.

With Covanta's help, Diamond increased recycling and eliminated waste sent to landfills.

Covanta Publishes Case Study on Diamond's Zero Manufacturing Waste to Landfill Initiative

Covanta published a case study on Diamond Packaging's
zero manufacturing waste to landfill initiative.
The biggest challenge faced by a company that’s defined itself as innovative and sustainability‐focused since 1911 is to remain on the forefront of green business operation.

After more than a century of sustainable business practices - in an industry where waste can quickly mount - making a difference often comes down to the incremental steps a company chooses to take.

Diamond Packaging chose the road less traveled, becoming the only American‐owned folding carton manufacturer to achieve zero manufacturing waste‐to‐landfill status: the gold standard of green business operation.

With the help of Covanta, as well as additional partners, the waste stream that leaves the Diamond Packaging facility eventually returns to it in the form of raw materials.

What is Energy-from-Waste (EfW) ?

This video explains the Energy-from-Waste (EfW) process.
Energy-from-Waste (EfW) video
Zero manufacturing waste to landfill is defined by Diamond Packaging as 100% landfill waste diversion through a combination of recycling and energy recovery solutions. In Diamond’s case it accounts for all waste related to the manufacture of folding cartons, including paperboard, plastic, metal, industrial waste, and regulated waste, with the exception of construction and demolition (CD) waste.

To achieve zero manufacturing waste to landfill status, Diamond’s two manufacturing facilities reduced their overall waste streams and increased recycling rates to approximately 98 percent. All remaining waste is sent for fuels blending or to Covanta Energy for Energy-from-Waste (EfW), eliminating the need for landfill disposal.

What is Energy-from-Waste (EfW)?

This video, produced by the ASME Energy Forum and Covanta Energy, uses colorful drawings, diagrams and step-by-step explanations to explain the EfW process.
